The Treatment or Valorization Centers are constantly in search of oily waste to be treated. Other than a few liquid residues from particular cargo which require destruction by incineration, maritime waste from ships are noble residues in the way of energy (they are called
slop or
sludge depending on the water content).
Mainly constituted of a phase of water and hydrocarbons (diesel oil, light or heavy fuel oil, sewage oil, or rotten bunker oil), there is little chance that they contain dangerous products or chemicals unlike land residues.
Once these two phases are separated by centrifugation, the residual hydrocarbon part may be sold as a substitute calorific energy on the local market (cement plants, industrial furnaces, power plants …
Non-existent a few years ago, the maritime residues, the unloading of which is now obligatory (MARPOL convention), represent a significant new source of provisions for Treatment centers.
The shipowners, to complete the diverse qualitative norms which they apply for, are in search of complete traceability.
This is why, if desired, the maritime Collectors (members of the system
www.ship-waste.com) may ask their treatment centers
to quarterly transmit to us the volumes treated.
This ratio of waste collected / waste treated, posted on-line, will permit shipowners to select the Collector of their choice according to the quality ranking required.
